Surgical approach

From diagnostic scopes
to complex open surgery

Our partner hospitals are equipped for the full spectrum of gastrointestinal care — from outpatient endoscopy and laparoscopic procedures to complex multi-stage colorectal and hepatobiliary surgery. Surgeons are board-certified, fellowship-trained, and many have trained or practiced in the US and Europe.

Most procedures use minimally invasive laparoscopic or robotic-assisted techniques wherever clinically appropriate — resulting in shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, and less post-operative pain than open surgery.

MyMediTour is a medical tourism facilitator. All procedures are performed by licensed physicians at our partner facilities. Treatment decisions are made by the treating surgeon after reviewing your case. Results vary by patient and condition.

Honest answers

What patients ask before deciding

GI surgery is serious — and so are the questions patients bring to us. Here are the ones we hear most often, answered plainly.

Many are trained at US and European institutions. Board certification, fellowship training, and surgical volume are what define a GI surgeon's capability — not the country where they practice. Our partner hospitals include surgeons who completed residencies or fellowships at Johns Hopkins, Cleveland Clinic affiliates, and leading European centers. We vet credentials and surgical volume before adding any facility to our network.

Follow-up care is planned as part of the coordination before you travel. Your treating surgeon will provide detailed discharge instructions and a post-operative care plan that your home physician can follow. We also provide full documentation — operative reports, pathology results, imaging — in a format US physicians expect. Continuity of care is not an afterthought — it's part of the surgical plan.

It depends on the procedure. Diagnostic endoscopy or laparoscopic cholecystectomy may require only 3–5 days in-country. Colorectal resection or complex surgery typically requires 10–14 days minimum before it's safe to travel home. Your coordinator will walk you through the recommended timeline for your specific procedure after the surgical team reviews your case.

Our partner hospitals are fully equipped to manage surgical complications — including ICU support, re-intervention, and extended care. Complications do not mean you're stranded or without support. The same hospital team that performed your procedure manages any post-operative issues. We also remain available as your coordination contact throughout your recovery. We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers medical evacuation for added peace of mind.

Savings vary by procedure and destination. As a general reference: laparoscopic cholecystectomy that costs $15,000–$25,000 in the US may run $2,500–$5,000 in Colombia or Costa Rica. Colorectal resection that costs $60,000–$120,000 in the US may be $12,000–$25,000 at a comparable facility abroad. These are estimates — your coordinator will obtain specific quotes from the surgical team after reviewing your case. All quotes are provided before you commit to any travel or procedure.

Yes. Our partner hospitals include oncological surgery departments that handle colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, liver tumors, and pancreatic conditions. Complex cases are welcome — the surgical team's review process is designed precisely for cases that require experienced specialist assessment. We do not guarantee acceptance; the surgeon reviews each case on its merits. But we do not turn away complex inquiries — we submit them and let the clinical team determine candidacy.
